Connecting generosity and joy since 2011
The Joel Barlow High School Alumni Association is a group of volunteer alumni who work together to build community and raise money for scholarships and other initiatives for Barlow students. We organize events, fundraisers, and launched an online alumni community in early 2018. Our quarterly meetings take place in the JBHS Career Office and volunteers are welcome to join remotely. Please read the section on how to register for the online community as soon as possible.
In 2019 we decided it was time for a more professional look and joined 360alumni.com. We encourage everyone to go to barlow.360alumni.com and register since that is where the bulk of our news is in addition to our Facebook page. These are the two places where we put most of our information. If you have been contacted by another Joel Barlow High School Alumni Association link, it is bogus and is in no way part of the actual JBHSAA that we formed in 2011; the first and only alumni organization ever at Joel Barlow High School.
We are currently in the middle of our very first Capital Campaign to build Phase One of the JBHSAA Reading Room. In less than eight months we are almost halfway to our goal thanks to the support of many alumni. It is our hope that by this time next year we will have reached our goal so that we can begin construction.
Please stay connected and let us hear from you so we can share your news. Contact infojbhsaa@gmail.com.
We are grateful to all who have supported us and continue to do so.

JOEL BARLOW HIGH SCHOOL UPDATE JBHS students are currently attending school as part of the hybrid model. This will continue through the month of December. At that time, it will be reassessed. The hybrid model is being used across the country to cut back on the numbers of students in a classroom at any given time. Currently, half the class is in school on Mondays and Tuesdays while the other half attends on Thursdays and Fridays. Wednesday becomes a shared day that flips between the two each week meaning that one week students will be in class on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and the next group will be in class the next week on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Feedback from both teachers and students is that, for the most part, it is working well. We extend our thanks to all the teachers who are making this possible. It is a lot of extra work and juggling. We are grateful to all of them; JBHS Sports Update: News from the Athletic Department All teams did very well in the regular season and most have now moved on to postseason play within our SWC South Division. Girls Swimming and Boys & Girls Cross Country have finished their seasons and were very pleased with their progress and improvement. The Boys XC team finished 4th in the league overall and the Girls XC team finished 7th. There are still some virtual swim meets that haven't happened yet, so we are not sure of the swim final standings, but our Medley Relay team broke the school record which was set back in 1999! Football was able to play five modified games with no postseason, but there is still a chance that a regular football season may take place sometime in early Spring. Field Hockey, Girls & Boys Soccer, and Girls Volleyball are still playing and are scheduled to wrap up very soon. NOTE: There will not be a Hall of Fame celebration this year, and there are no Homecoming festivities planned either. The student council is planning a virtual pep rally/spirit week beginning next week. |

DR. RYDELL HARRISON Dr. Rydell Harrison has been appointed as the new Superintendent of schools for Redding/Easton Region 9. Dr. Harrison comes with an impressive background and a wealth of experience. Dr. Harrison holds a doctoral degree in Education Leadership from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a master’s degree in Divinity from Duke University, and a bachelor’s degree in music from Rutgers University. Before relocating to Connecticut in 2017, Dr. Harrison served as a teacher, building level administrator, central office staff member, and an assistant superintendent in the high-performing school district of Chapel Hill-Carrboro in North Carolina. Dr. Harrison is "committed to building relationships with teachers, students, parents, and the community." This sounds like a win/win for all involved. The Joel Barlow High School Alumni Association extends a warm welcome to Dr. Harrison. ELECTION REFLECTIONS
Looking back on the last several months, surely this was the most contentious election that I have experienced in my lifetime. As I write, it is still far from over as our current President as yet has not conceded to the Biden win. This is unprecedented on many levels. Whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, I would like to turn my focus to the words of Joe Biden as he pleas for unity and understanding suggesting that we are not red states or blue states, we are the United States. He went on to say that our opponents are not our enemies, they are Americans. As I reflect on the events of the last several weeks, I find his words encouraging as we all attempt to move on with our lives. None of us want to see our children affiliated with hate groups that promote violence. By example, I hope that we can all follow that lead. Most importantly, I pray that this horrific pandemic will soon end. The loss of lives is extraordinary and has affected many families; some of whom very sadly did not think it was a serious threat. Our hearts go out to all families who have lost loved ones and dear friends and to our front line workers who are physically exhausted and running out of supplies. In closing, we have just seen our first female, first African American-Asian American elected to the office of Vice President of the United States of America. This is a remarkable moment in history. Kamala’s message to the young people viewing her election was impressive: "DREAM WITH AMBITION, LEAD WITH CONVICTION, AND SEE YOURSELF IN A WAY THAT OTHERS MIGHT NOT SEE YOU BECAUSE THEY'VE NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE." |
